You can quickly recognize the difference between a boss and an alpha: a boss builds a career at others' expense. An alpha, on the other hand, uses his leadership qualities to benefit all. He uses his natural resources of strength of character in order to become the acknowledged leader of a successful team. The artificial power projection of a boss is feared; the natural dominance of an alpha is respected. Fear paralyzes. Respect motivates. It is like in the mountains: a team can only be led through the climb by the first person on the rope. A genuine alpha therefore needs to keep the summit in sight just as much as the gaping abyss behind the person at the other end of the rope. The leader's steps determine whether they arrive safely at the summit or fall crashing down, between success and defeat. The same goes for both the leader and all of those who follow the same path.
